A crow stands stark against a dark landscape, the last vestiges of autumn clinging to frozen branches as the landscape settles with snow. Below water surrenders to gravity as it drops into the unseen depths. Ink and light color on silk in a green silk border patterned with tangled vines and featuring stag antler rollers. It is 19 x 76-1/2 inches (48 x 194 cm) and in overall great condition.
Tanaka Raisho (1867-1940) was born in Shimane prefecture, into an important household which fell to ills after the Imperial restoration in 1867. So giving up his dreams to study in Kyoto, he became a traveling artist, painting for fees in the mountainous areas of Hiroshima and Shimane, going from village to village and sending his earnings home to help the family. With copies of the work of Mori Kansai, he was self taught; only making it to Kyoto at the age of 36. A very late start for an artist at that time. After moving to Tokyo, and despite his age, he was accepted into the circle of Kawabata Gyokusho (1842-1913) and flourished under his tutelage, garnering much acclaim at the Nihon Bijutsu Kyokai Exhibition, and Teiten/Bunten National Exhibitions. However after the great Kanto earthquake of 1923 destroyed the city, he returned to Hiroshima where he lived out his final years.

Birds take shelter for the coming of night as the mist rolls in on the bare branches of a stand of trees huddled along a stream, all dyed with the colors of late autumn in this exceptional work by Hashimoto Kansetsu enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Seen in silhouette against the moon, are these crows, the stalwart creatures which hunker down through winter, or are they Sagi (herons) harbingers of the cold to come? This painting is a superb example of his mature style. It is mounted in the finest brocades of the time, and features large ivory rollers (which would need to be changed if exporting). It comes enclosed in a double wood box, the inner Kiri, complete with a special silk and paper cover to protect the top, the outer covered in red lacquer. The scroll is 73 .5 x 163 cm (29 x 64 inches) and is in fine condition. Hashimoto Kansetsu (1883–1945) was born in Kobe, son of painter Hashimoto Kaikan from whom he gained a love of Chinese culture. He studied at Chikujokai under Takeuchi Seiho (1864-1942), but eventually withdrew due to differences of opinion. He visited Europe in 1921 and after that spent part of almost every year in China. Many of his paintings were inspired by Chinese scenery or Chinese classical literature. His former residence in Kyoto is now a museum of his work called the Hakusasonso

A complex landscape wraps around and climbs up this exquisite porcelain vase by Daimaru Hokuho dating from the early to mid 20th century. It is 13 inches (33 cm) tall and in excellent condition. There is no box.
Hokuho would have been rated in the top 10 porcelain artist of Kyoto, along with Suwa Sozan, Ito Suiko, Ito Tozan, Miyanaga Tozan, Takahashi Dohachi, Seifu Yohei, Kiyomizu Rokubei, Miura Chikusen and Kiyomizu Zoroku, all artists active from the Meiji through the early Showa eras. He is best remembered for his Chinese forms and Sencha thin tea ware. Born in Ishikawa in 1879, he was initially trained in the Kutani tradition before moving to Kyoto in 1899 to study porcelain throwing and decoration there. He also spent several years in China where he became adept at the aforementioned Sencha aesthetic. Daimaru Hokuho II (Tatsuo, b. 1926) studied under both his father and Kiyomizu Rokubei V and VI. He exhibited frequently with the Nitten National Exhibition, where he would serve as a judge.

An Edo period suit of raw iron with all matching parts, featuring 16 plate helmet with two lame shikoro and large fukigaeshi. The mask is fantastic, a real stunner with dramatic features and a large mustache. It has five plate sode and a go-mai-do cuirass of five iron plates, with kusazuri of leather scales. The sangu are all matching, very nice on dark silk tightly woven iron scales, with a crest in brass on the back of the hands. The original Maedate is in the form of a box and would likely have once held a charm for protection inside, perhaps a copy of the lotus sutra. A fine and unique armo dating from the mid to later Edo. The only damage of note is a general loss of lacquer on the leather kusazuri scales. It comes in the wooden box pictured. Stand and shipping are not included in the list price.

Koi frolic, splashing gold and silver waves as they leap and battle for the top of this stacking food dish dating from the later 19th century. The design is striking! Outside is polished black loaded down with gold and silver maki-e with applied kirigane cut gold squares. Inside is festive red. The box (assembled) is 25 x 23 x 38 cm (10 x 9 x 15 inches). Some minor dings but overall, very nice condition for something which has seen use.

A large 17th to 18th century Buddhist sculpture of a Rakan (arahat), well sculpted, his naked torso gilded in gold with robes and shoes in black lacquer, carrying a large urn which is an active incense burner. The sculpture is 2 feet (61 cm) tall and in overall fine condition. There are minor losses to the lacquer and gilding typical of age, and a repair to his left foot. Both little fingers are missing from his hands; these could be repaired if desired at additional cost.

Veins of green Kai-yu meander over the body of this spectacular example of Edo period Tamba Pottery capping rich red clay rising from an abrupt base. A few bubbles in the clay reveal character about the torso, the lip powerfully rendered over the shoulder, which slumps to one side like some haggard but still proud old soldier. Four looping handles (mimi) would allow the lid to be tied down. Between two a drip from the roof of the kiln has adhered to the clay forming a point of interest. Retaining the character of Momoyama firing techniques, and easily classified as such, I believe this dates from the early Edo period, 17th century. The Tsubo is 18 inches (46 cm) tall, 13 inches (33 cm) diameter, and without cracks or repairs. Due to size the cost of shipping will be accrued separately.

A bronze bell dated Kanbun 10 (1670) which would have been suspended in front of a Shinto shrine worship hall, and struck with a knotted rope to awaken the gods to listen to one’s prayers. Inscribed in the surface around dials of lotus flowers is: An auspicious day in the 7th month of Kanbun 10, followed by the names Honda Yasutoki Ko and Hiramoto Sukeyuki opposite a dedication to the god of water the Hachidairyu-jin followed by a place name near Awazu in modern day Shiga prefecture. The Hachidairyu-O or eight headed dragon king (god) is a creature who controls water and is enshrined in the sacred place of Takachiho, in Kyushu, with branch shrines throughout Japan. Roughly 26 cm (10-1/2 inches) diameter and weighs 3.4 kg (7.5 pounds). There is a scratch in the backside, (see close-up photos) otherwise it is in excellent original condition with two casting flaws which have become pin holes in the upper back. The combination of Buddhist and Shinto Iconography is certainly a point of interest with Japanese religious ideology.

Copper green and dark iron decorate the pale glazed sides of this exquisite box dating from the early Edo period (17th century) wrapped in a silk lined sarasa bag and enclosed in a black lacquered wood box. It is 1-3/4 inches (4.5 cm) square, roughly 3 inches (7 cm) tall and in overall fine condition.

Sakura blossoms begin to open among the draping branches of a weeping willow soughing in the breeze on this beautiful lacquer box by Inami Kirokusai enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Wajima Nuri Soshun Maki-e Suzuri Bako (Ink Stone Box of Early Spring Design from Wajima). The design is performed over highly polished black, the interior in nashiji with pine saplings in raised design around the ink stone and water dropper. It is 24.5 x 13 x 3 cm (10 x 5 x 1-1/2 inches) and in excellent condition.
The four generations of the Inami family spanning the Meiji to contemporary were the subject of a major retrospective at the Ishikawa Wajima Lacquer Museum in 2013.

Water tumbles from steep dark hills into a roiling sea of clouds on this painting by Japanese artist Fukuda Kodojin (1865-1944) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The erratic brushwork and radical form of this scroll typify work by the unusual self taught Nanga artist. Three tiny huts cluster on the edge of dark forest, a few paddies scratched from the rugged earth, their seeming insignificance a testament to the artists great love of nature. The scroll is 18-1/2 by 82 inches (47 x 208 cm) and in excellent condition. Bordered in green tea colored brocade, it features ivory rollers, and comes enclosed in the original signed box which is in turn enclosed in a lacquered wooden box (nijubako), wrapped in the original paper sleeve. Kodojin's status as a poet calligrapher and literati artist has reached legendary status. Born at a time of great change (4 years before the final fall of the Edo Government), he lived through the westernization of Meiji, Taisho Democracy, the rise of Imperialism and final defeat of the Showa eras. He was self taught, part of a small group of artists existing outside conventional circles in pre-war Japan. He moved to a village outside of Kyoto in 1901, where he supported himself and his family by privately tutoring those who wished to learn Chinese-style poetry. Kodojin's was simply a scholar. His poetry, painting, and calligraphy all stem from a life-long cultivation of the mind. He was known to have taken the time just before his death to destroy the large portion of his own remaining work, leaving only that which must have met some personal criteria. Twenty five paintings by the artist formed a private exhibition (from Gitter-Yelen) at the New Orleans Museum of Art in 2000, and he is part of the Hakutakuan collection among many others.

A framed calligraphy fan painting by important Edo period poet Kawano Tetsuto (1825-1867), published in the book Shijin Kano Tetsuto (1932). The ancient paper fan is mounted in a field of gold flake bordered with black lacquered wood, the frame measuring 11-1/2 by 23-1/2 inches (29 x 59.5 cm). There is one spot of damage to the flecked gold mounting in the lower right (see photos). Tetsuto was an influential poet and scholar of the late Edo period, trained in the arts under Yoshida Kakusen and Somekawa Seigan. Forced to read by his father, he began studying Confucian theory at the age of 6, and by 11 had mastered the 100 Sanyoshi poems, to be called a genius. Two years later he became a pupil of Shirotani Junji. He lived rather freely, loving wine, song and women. He wrote the poems Ho-no-Kai-ko and Shuengai-Nishu and was also a well known flute player. In 1862, five years before his death, he was elevated to the position of a guardian (hanshu Seiwako Oban Gashira) at Nijo castle in Kyoto. During his life he established a school in Osaka; his most famous disciples were Noguchi Shoyo and Yagi Tenkawa. In 1867 he died of complications from diabetes. 60 years after the passing of Tetsuto, his work remained so important; his rank was again elevated by the Showa Emperor in 1928. A copy of the book in which this piece was published is included with the sale.

Four calligraphy works dating from the Edo period mounted on an antique two-panel Kama-byobu tearoom screen; the backing paper covered with minute gold flake. The centerpiece of the screen is a scene of Mt. Fuji next to the character Ryu (for Dragon). This piece is signed Ryukoubi (Soro Ryu 1714-1792) a well documented artist known for calligraphy and poetry who seemed to change names and addresses as often as humanly possible. The other three pieces are by a separate artist, one of which bears the artists stamp. Each character has been bordered in silver leaf, before being applied to the gold flecked backing. The screen measures 17-1/2 by 70 inches (45cm by 178cm) and dates to the early 20th century. It is typical for pieces and screens to be remounted periodically due to damage or age, or even simply fashion, as popular styles of border material and backing paper change. Due to typical wear, we have had the back paper of this screen replaced.

A six panel gold screen decorated in a style harkening to the first half of the Edo featuring angular trees interspersed with blossoming cherries, a torrent splashing angrily through the right quarter topped with moriage gold clouds. Many repairs and losses to the heavy pigments attest to the great age of the painting. Excellent size for wall mounting, it is 62 x 138 inches (157.5 x 350 cm). The border is from a later mounting. Due to size the cost of shipping is to be accrued separately.

The character Take (bamboo) is struck with six brisk strokes of dark ink on this Chagake tea scroll signed Mitsuhiro (Karasuma Mitsuhiro, 1578-1638) and dated 1631. The calligraphy is exquisite. Mitsuhiro was born the son of Karasuma Mitsunobu (1543-1606) and, like his auspicious father, was a well known poet and songwriter accomplished in calligraphy. The paper is, as might be expected, repaired in several places and has marks and yellowing consistent with age, however is still supple and easily displayed. It is bordered in crushed blue paper, dating to the Meiji period, and came from the same collection as the two scrolls by Genryu. The scroll measures 22-1/2 by 44 inches (57 x 112 cm). There is one crease penetrating from the left side through the first character of the signature. Otherwise the scroll is in surprisingly good condition.

The gist of the script is Taoist, something to the effect of: This is my life, I am neither overtly talented nor gifted with genius, like a sail boat alone tossed among the waves I drink freely of sake untouched (unfettered) by others seen only from a distance. Ink on paper in a the rough silk border preferred by Literati artists with exquisite turned ivory rollers enclosed in a period wooden box (the rollers will be changed for something suitable if exporting). The scroll is 17-1/2 x 75-1/2 inches (44 x 192 cm) and is in overall very good condition, with minor wrinkles and handling marks typical of age.
Shibano Ritsuzan (1736-1807) was a Confucian Literati associated with the Edo government in the 18th to early 19th centuries. He was considered one of the three great scholars of the Kansei era. Born under the walls of Takamatsu castle in Kagawa on the Island of Shikoku, he was tutored first under Goto Shibayama. Recognizing his brilliance, along with Nakamura Bunrin, he was sent to the capitol of Edo in 1753 to study at the Yushima Seido academy established by the 5th Shogun. From 1765 he began studying history under Takahashi Zunan and in 1767 was appointed as an official scholar of the Tokushima Clan. In 1787 he was given an official appointment by the Shogunate, and he served them there, becoming the op scholar at his alma mater of Yushima Seido in 1790.

A deep and mournful sound emanates from this ancient Temple bell from Zennoji temple dated the 20th day, fourth month of 1686. One panel is inscribed Humbly presented, Shokakuzan Zenno Zen-Temple treasure, For the Nyodendoshi-Mujo Bosatsu Buddha. It is further inscribed Donated by Harada Shitaro of Saijo Village for the priest Jusanzoshu. We have been told by the previous owner this and another bell are from Zennoji Temple in Kanazawa prefecture. The striker plate, in the form of a petaled flower, has worn over time to be almost indistinguishable in form. The bell measures 21 inches (53 cm) tall, 12-1/2 inches (32 cm) in diameter. There is a casting flaw beneath one of the studs, with a dent below, otherwise is in fine condition, especially considering its age. Originally a small Zen temple founded in 1566 on Shokakuzan Mountain, Zennoji was moved down to the base of the mountain later, and is recorded in the book ShinpenKamakuraShi published in 1685. The temples records state it was moved after being heavily damaged from a typhoon caused landslide. This is believed to have taken place over time between 1688 and 1731. Currently the temple bears a different first character (Sennoji), however is still read Zennoji in the local district. Now the temple houses a standing Kanon, but was originally said to have been dedicated to AizenMyo-O, destroyed by fire in the later Edo, and it was after this last rebuilding the temple name was changed.
