The comic-strip dog character Norakuro waves from the cockpit of this ceramic water-dropper (for grinding ink) in the shape of a war-plane. A waterdropper (suiteki) is filled with water and used to drip water onto a stone when grinding ink. This Suiteki has a wingspan of roughly 9.5 cm (just less than 4 inches). Norakuro is a black and white dog enlisted as a private in the “Mokenrentai” (Fierce Dog Brigade), an Imperial army of white dogs fighting in a war against the Monkey Army. In the West we might consider mortal enemies to be like cats and dogs, but in Japan it has always been monkeys and dogs (later the enemy would become pigs). This war-time comic first appeared in 1931 in Shonen Kurabu (Boy’s Club) magazine and was clearly based on the Japanese Imperial Army of the time. The creator, Tagawa Suiho, had served in the army and used his experience as a basis for the comic strip. The series, with its simple dialogue and poetic illustrations, was one of the most successful Japanese comics of the 1930s. Although it was highly successful the main character, blundering his way through the banalities and harrows of daily military life, was taken to be critical of the Imperial Army and was forcibly cancelled in 1941 by government censors.

The time of Obon is upon us, the middle of August when the spirits of the dead return to visit their families. A lantern is hung so the wandering souls may find their way. And on the last day of Obon (August 16), in Kyoto, is held perhaps the most famous of all the festivals, commonly referred to as Daimonji-yaki, when 6 massive characters are lit on fire in the mountains surrounding the city to light the way home for the ancestors. Unlike the Gion festival or Aoi Festival, made for tourists, it is very local, personal, and an almost melancholy event. You will find the entire city celebrating with family, then, after dark, out in the streets, silently watching the inferno roar up on the mountains in a torrent of sparks making the shapes of Dai, Myo, ho, fune….orchestrated to start concentrically around the city beginning in the east. And after the crescendo, the flames wane, then flicker and disappear taking the summer with them. It is the most Japanese of festivals with its emphasis on the pathos and transience of life.

Stretched between the sides are four silk panels backed with paper. On three sides are painted abandoned skulls (two signed Ko-u, the third unknown) and on the fourth an epitaph dated the 8th month of Meiji 36 dedicated to appeasing the ghosts of honored ancestors signed Kokin. The lantern is 25.5 cm (10 inches) square, 46.5 cm (18-1/2 inches) tall and in overall excellent condition. It comes in the original wooden storage box.

An ancient pine and youthful bamboo rise in gold against a striking red background on this scroll set by Hirai Chokusui dated Mid-summer of Taisho 2 (1913) an enclosed in the original signed double wood box titled Ro-matsu Fu-chiku (ancient Pine, Wind in the Bamboo) Kindega Kenpon Sofuku (Gold Painted Silk Pair). The elegant scene is painted with gold on the finest red silk with gold border extended above and below with a deep solid Ichionji of burgundy wine wrapped in a field of azure washed with the slightest hint of powdered silver, so they shimmer, like sunlight coming through the trees. They feature solid ivory rollers (these will be changed if exporting) denoting the importance given to the pair. Each measures 65 x 213 cm (25-1/2 x 83-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition. This is a rare find!

An original Edo period kōsatsu public proclamation dated Tenwa I (1681) detailing the laws against Christianity, rewards for turning in a Christian to the authorities, as well as punishment for the offenders. Of cypress wood with sumi ink, and a hand-forged iron loop for suspension from a post or gate. The signboard has a shallow peaked “roof” to protect the calligraphy from the rain. However decades in the weather have caused the original surface to wear and bake away the surface, leaving the areas originally written with ink raised above the exposed wood. Few of these kosatsu survive. It is roughly 134 x 46 cm (52-1/2 x 18 inches). A similar Kosatsu in the collection of the museum of the Catholic University of America is translated:
The Christian religion has already been prohibited for many years. Everyone who gives ground for suspicion must be denounced, the following rewards are hereby promised.

Christianity came to Japan around 1549, and initially received a great many converts, including warlords (Daimyo) and others in powerful positions. The great warlord Oda Nobunaga is said to have been keenly interested in religions and all things foreign. However, Jesuits teaching that God was higher than the Lord or Imperial authority was perceived as undermining governmental legitimacy, and was subsequently initially banned in 1587 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, although loosely enforced until the Shimabara rebellion in 1637, after which it was strictly enforced. With the Catholic clergy expelled from Japan completely in the mid-17th century, many Japanese Catholics practiced their faith in secret as government officials publicly posted boards like these around Japan. The Japanese Christians who continued to practice in secret during the time of persecution were known as Kakure Kirishitan, literally “hidden Christians.” Christianity remained illegal until the mid 19th century. Another example dated to 1682 is in collection of The Burke Library, New York, another is in the collection of the Sophia University in Tokyo and represent one piece of the fascinating history of Christianity in Japan.

Early Edo Myochin Signed Nimai Do with Nanban influence featuring gilded kusazuri and sode laced with blue chord dated Genwa 3 (1620). There are rows of Prominent rivets all about with nobori-kiri crests on the top of the munaita. Comes with an old wrapping cloth dyed with the same crest. The Hon-kozane Kusazuri are removable, attached to two leather belts suspended from iron tongs about the waist. The takahimo shoulder straps are wrapped in leather. The shaped horn clasps are extant but one is broken, the other delicate. The signature and date along with another illegible cartouche are inside the Do exposed through squares cut through the gilded leather lining. Made for an adult, it comes with a set of gilded Sode shoulder guards laced with the same indigo chord.

A rare and stunning set of Kinrande sake cups by the elusive Nakamura Shuto I enclosed in the original compartmentalized signed wooden box dating from the late Meiji to Taisho period. Crisp designs of shishi lions frolicking among peonies in genuine gold are expertly applied to the brilliant red outside, while inside landscapes of plum, pine and bamboo blossom in minute detail in Sometsuke blue on white. The artists seal is deeply impressed inside the foot ring. Each cup is 5.5 cm (2-1/4 inches) diameter and in excellent condition. Phenomenal! It has been a long time since I have found a piece by Shuto.

Golden cranes soar among clouds etched into the surface of this solid silver Japanese hanging incense burner (Tsuri Koro) dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Inside is an ash-cup suspended in a triple-hinged gimble which keeps the ash pot upright no matter the angle of the ball itself. On the side is impressed the official Kokuin which reads Jungin (pure silver). The cranes have a soft golden sheen and are likely gilded or damascened with gold. It hangs from three silk chords tied to ringlets on the lower half, and a similar ringlet on bottom holds a decorative tassel. Above is a second smaller orb of the same silver construction used to tighten the suspending ropes. The incense burner is 15 cm (6 inches) diameter weighing 1.4 kilograms (3.08 lbs) and is in overall excellent original condition of hammered and chiseled silver inlaid in gold. The silk chords have faded from purple to a dark tea colored brown.

A bronze bell dated Kanbun 10 (1670) which would have been suspended in front of a Shinto shrine worship hall, and struck with a knotted rope to awaken the gods to listen to one’s prayers. Inscribed in the surface around dials of lotus flowers is: An auspicious day in the 7th month of Kanbun 10, followed by the names Honda Yasutoki Ko and Hiramoto Sukeyuki opposite a dedication to the god of water the Hachidairyu-jin followed by a place name near Awazu in modern day Shiga prefecture. The Hachidairyu-O or eight headed dragon king (god) is a creature who controls water and is enshrined in the sacred place of Takachiho, in Kyushu, with branch shrines throughout Japan. Roughly 26 cm (10-1/2 inches) diameter and weighs 3.4 kg (7.5 pounds). There is a scratch in the backside, (see close-up photos) otherwise it is in excellent original condition with two casting flaws which have become pin holes in the upper back. The combination of Buddhist and Shinto Iconography is certainly a point of interest with Japanese religious ideology.

No discussion on 20th century Kyoto ceramics can skip over the importance of the Kyoto Shi Tojiki Shiken-sho ceramics research facility at which all the luminaries studied and laid the foundation for a number of the early Living National Treasures. Here is a delicate vessel with elegant curves decorated with poppies dating from the early 20th century enclosed in an age darkened wooden box titled : Kyoto Tojiki Shikensho-sei (Made by the Kyoto Ceramics Research Facility) Keshi Moyo Kabin (Poppy Design Vase). It is 22.5 cm (9 inches) tall and in excellent condition.

Gold glimmers on the rim against pale concrete tones on this rare mid-Edo period tea bowl from the Utsutsugawa kiln in Nagasaki prefecture, late 17th to early 18th century. Waves of brush strokes decorate the outside, while the white slip cascades from the rim in withering streaks within. A kutsuki on the side testifies to some event which happened during the firing, where another piece of pottery collapsed against the side, fusing and causing the bowl to deform. This force created a crack where the bowl bent, which has now been enhanced with gold. It comes enclosed in a custom made modern wooden collectors box titled Utsutsugawa Kama Kutsu-Gata Chawan. The bowl is 8.5 x 14 x 7 cm (3-1/2 x 6 x 3 inches. Originally a kiln flaw, possibly once discarded, it was rescued and repaired with a sumptuous design of gold powder on lacquer.

A very unusual Toyoraku Usubata vase covered outside in black lacquer decorated with geometric gold maki-e designs, the inside nearly swamped by organic green flowing to the center. It comes enclosed in the original somewhat dilapidated wooden box signed: The 75 year old man Toyosuke. This appears to be the signature of the third generation, and so would date from 1854, only a few years prior to the death of the fourth generation who began the technique of lacquering pots. It is 25.5 cm (10 inches) diameter at the top, and stands21 cm (8-1/4 inches) tall, in overall excellent condition. Lacquer has been re-applied to the foot ring and there is a small loss in the bulbous center of the vase.

Fabulous carved florals rise in vibrant color off the surface of this yellow glazed vase by Kato Keizan II enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 31 cm (12-1/2 inches) tall, 24 cm (9-1/2 inches) diameter and in excellent condition.

He established himself in the same neighborhood in Kyoto, where he became well known for celadon and Chinese based porcelain forms. Works by this artist are held in the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto among others. In 1931, he began assisting his father at his ceramics workshop and in the same year became a member of the Shinko Kogei Association, which was presided over by Rokubei (5th Generation), from whom he sought guidance. Right from the beginning, he was repeatedly selected to exhibit his works at exhibitions such as the Imperial Exhibition, Kyoto Prefectural Exhibitions, and others, received praise from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry as a preserver of technology in 1940. After the war, he became a founding member of the Kyoto Ceramics Association in 1955, which demonstrated the sway he held in the Kyoto ceramics sphere. With the death of his father in 1963, he took over as 2nd generation Kato Keizan and moved the kiln to Oyamazaki. Pursuing a revival of Song dynasty-style celadon and Tenryuji celadon, he developed beautiful glazes such as tobiseiji celadon, kiba-hakuji porcelain, and purple celadon.

A fabulous baluster form vase by the first generation Kato Keizan enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Gaoji Ryumimi Chokoku Kabin(Ivory Porcelain Dragon Ear Carved Vase). Low on the flaring neck two dragons form handles, and the body of the vessel as carved with archaic symbols reflecting continental taste popular from the Meiji through Taisho to early Showa period. It is 33 cm (13 inches) tall 19.5 cm (7-3/4 inches) diameter and in excellent condition. Attached to the base is a collection seal from the Kono Family Collection.

A very unusual set of three scrolls depicting the women of Shimabara looking down with trepidation at a Fumi-e (a Christian symbol) before lotus enclosed in a wooden box titled Shizan Shimabara-me Sanpuku Tsui (Shizan, Women of Shimabara Three Scroll Set). The Fumi-e was a bronze or wood placard embellished with a Christian symbol upon which people were forced to step to prove that they were not Christians during the ban on Christianity throughout most of the Edo period. Any who refused to step on the image would be tortured or executed, often in horrific manner. Here the two graceful figures appear dressed in kimono bearing a leaf pattern with white scarves on their heads denoting purity. Interestingly the artist has juxtaposed the central image with its symbol of Christ on the cross against a background of ghostly white lotus flowers, traditional symbols of Buddhism. Each scroll is 64.5 x 208 cm (25-1/2 x 82 inches). There is faint scattered foxing, a soft wrinkle in the lotus on the central scroll, and some water stains up the left edge of the painting on the right. Likely an early work by Saito Shizan. Saito Shizan (1902-1963) was born in Shiga prefecture in 1902, and initially studied under Yamamoto Shunkyo in the modern Shijo style before entering the Kyoto Municipal University of Arts. He was accepted into the Teiten, Bunten and Nitten national exhibitions both pre and post war.

In response to oppressive taxation and anti-Christian policies by feudal lords sent to replace the former Christian Daimyo, Ronin and peasants rose up, eventually forming an army of combatants and non-combatants of around 37,000. They nearly seized two main fortresses before the Shogun sent an army of over 125,000 samurai against them. They retreated to Hara Castle on Shimabara, where they held out until April of that year, withstanding many mass assaults and bombardment by cannon of the Dutch seeking favor with the Shogunate. Eventually the castle fell, and all rebels were beheaded or crucified, their bodies piled inside the castle and burnt en-masse. On the Shimabara peninsula, most towns experienced a severe to total loss of population as a result of the rebellion. Japan severed ties with Portugal and expelled all missionaries. An existing ban on Christianity was then stringently enforced, and Christianity in Japan survived only underground. Except for the Dutch and a small contingent of Chinese merchants in Nagasaki, Japan then closed itself to the outside world for over 200 years. The Fumi-e became the dominant symbol of religious oppression, the ban on Christianity not officially lifted until 1871 (although the shogunate stopped executing Christians around the turn of the 19th century).

Two austere Bodhisattva play music and spread lotus petals before the benign countenance of Kannon while a fierce green God (god of thunder or wind) recoils, flame spouting from his mouth. This is a very unusual triptych enclosed in the original age darkened compartmentalized kiri wood box signed Urata Tenka titled Daiji Kannon no Zu (Image of the most merciful Kannon), Takahashi Koko Sho (Painted by Takahashi Koko). Urata Tenka was the first art-name (go) used by famed Meiji artist Takahashi Koko. The tension created by the movement and posture of the left figure juxtaposed against the serene silence of the celestial figures on the right is striking, with the central figure an island of calm and compassion in a tempestuous world. Pigment on silk in fine silk border with solid bone rollers. The scrolls are (Center) 96 x 223 cm (left & right) 52.5 x 222 (38 and 20-3/4 x 87-1/2 inches respectively). Overall they are in excellent condition, with toning of the silk typical of age. Beside the original Urata signature on the box has been added at a later date: By the deceased Takahashi Koko.

He died suddenly at the age of 37 after returning to Japan. A major figure in the art world, he left a solid mark on the Meiji painting stage. The benign figure of Monju Bosatsu bearing the sword of knowledge and a sutra astride a fierce Shishi lion exquisitely painted by Takagi Shunrin in 1920. The compassionate being appears in royal regalia and white robes seated on a lotus shaped saddle upon the fierce creatures back. Pigment on silk in the original silk mounting with large ivory rollers enclosed in the original signed wooden box dated Spring of Taisho 9 (1920). The Rollers will be changed if exporting. It is quite large at 87 x 265 cm (34-1/4 x 104-1/2 inches). A masterpiece of Taisho era Buddhist art in overall excellent condition, with some toning of the silk typical of age.

A large and rare mid Edo period Tamba Funa-dokkuri Ship Bottle made with flaring mouth and wide flat bottom for use on Ships. Down the side is inscribed the date Kyoho Gannen (First year of Kyoho, 1716). The Akadobe clay is covered in rich green glaze cascading in rivulets all about, with a few scattered windows of raw clay exposed. The base is slightly concave, impressed with a fern leaf. The Funa (ship) tokkuri shape was originally made for the use on ships, the side bottom keeping it from spilling in tempestuous seas. This one is 25.5 cm (10 inches) diameter, 21 cm (8 inches) tall and is in excellent condition, enclosed in an old wooden storage box titled Tamba-yaki Funa-dokkuri. An exceptional and rare example. Exceptional and rare, although I use the words sparingly, this would be a perfect Museum example.

A serving tray made of Kozai (Jap. old material) from Todaiji Temple in Nara branded with the marks of the 7 great temples of Nara and enclosed in the original wooden storage box dated 1925. It is turned from keyaki, a hardwood in the elm family famed for durability and beautiful wood grain. On the bottom of the tray is a seal which reads Daibutsuden Kozai (Old Material from the great Hall). The tray is 33 cm (13 inches) diameter and in excellent condition. In order to fund temple repairs, often wooden objects such as trays, Robuchi (hearth frames) Haidai (cup stands) among others were made from the original parts of a temple, and given as gifts to those who supported reconstruction or as a way to thank parishioners for donations. The Todaiji temple complex underwent extensive restorations in the early 20th century, and these trays were made at that time from the old posts or beams replaced in the repairs. They have been branded (yaki-in) with marks from the seven great temples of Nara (Nanto Shichi Daiji) Todaiji, Saidaiji, Daianji, Horyuji, Kofukuji Gangoji and Yakushiji temples respectively. On the box lid is written the title: Nanto Shichi Daiji Yaki-in Maru-bon (Round tray branded by the 7 great temples of the Southern Capitol). Inside the lid is written: Made from the old material of the Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple, at the bequest of the Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Art Institute). A handwritten epitaph inside the box states it was received as a gift from the politician and business magnate Oya Shichibei (1865-1929) of Osaka after completion of repairs to the great hall on an auspicious day in May of 1925 as attested to by Hirai Kinjiro (sp?) followed by five red seals.

A very rare colored figurine of a egret standing, foot raised, by Miyanaga Tozan I enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Known best for his celadon and sometsuke porcelains and tea ware, this figurine is a scarce example of his talent with figuration. Beautifully rendered in life-like detail, it is 21 cm (8 inches) tall and in excellent condition.

A vermilion Negoro lacquered tray with fluted corners on an elongated stem with heavy round foot in black lacquer dating from the Muromachi period with the temple name Zentoku-in written in red on the base. It is 27 x 27.5 x 25 cm tall (10-1/2 x 10-3/4 x 10 inches). Originally undoubtedly square, the discrepancy in width is due to shrinkage against the grain over the centuries. It comes in a late custom made wooden storage box. There are chips along the edges and a repair visible on the underside of the tray on one side. A crack directly across the center of the tray, a crack in the lacquer at the joint with the base, and a vertical crack in the base. This is all consistent with age. For similar examples see: Negoro, Efflorescence of Medieval Japanese Lacquerware (Miho Museum, 2013). One tray on page 39 figure 022 dated 1535 is nearly identical including the joinery.

A boxed set of fifteen unique bowls with lids for clear soup made for the Lord of the Yanagisawa family enclosed in a wooden box dated the 7th month of 1730. What makes this set quite unique is that each bowl is singular, a different design, color, shape or technique. But throughout is the one continuous symbol, the four petaled crest of the Yanagisawa clan. The box is titled Yakatasama, Go Suimono wan, Yangisawa Shimono and on the side Jugonin-mae. Yakatasama, means a nobleman's house such as a public house or a samurai house. Under the Shogunate it was a title or honorific granted to the head of a prestigious or meritorious samurai family or feudal lord of a Great Clan. Suimono Wan are bowls for clear soup served between parts of the meal to clean the palette. Yanagisawa Shimono is the name of a member of the Yanagisawa clan. On the side is written Jugonin-mae or service for 15. The box is divided into three compartments holding five bowls and lids in each compartment. Each bowl is roughly 12.5 cm (5 inches) diameter and they are in overall excellent condition with some browning of the lacquer inside due to heat from use.

In 1724, in gratitude to the family’s service and recognition of their skill at administration, they were granted control over four domains (Yamato, Omi, Kawachi and Ise) totaling 150,000 Koku of rice. Undoubtedly at that time there would have been a sudden need for furnishings bearing the symbol of the family throughout their four domains, and this set of bowls is one of those furnishings. To this day the crest adorns the Yanagisawa Bunko library a designated cultural property in Yamato Koriyama city housing tens of thousands of antique texts from the era, a testament to the power of this important clan.

Five matching boxes covered in black lacquer decorated with togidashi feathers in silver and gold enclosed in the original wooden box signed Shunji (active Meiji-Taisho period) and titled Hane-no-zu Maki-tabaco Shoshi (Feather decorated tabaco chest). Each faceted wood box has been covered in polished ink-black ro-iro lacquer, the diaphanous feathers then created on the surface with powdered gold and silver; then all is covered again in lacquer and polished through to reveal the design. An arduous process requiring much time and patience on the part of the artist. Each box features a gold rim and is lacquered with nashiji inside. They are 14.5 x 10.5 x 7 cm (5-3/4 x 4-1/8 x 2-3/4 inches) and in excellent condition, wrapped in cloth in separate compartments inside the fine kiri-wood storage box. Kanamori Shunji (Harutsugu) was a lacquer artist from Owari (modern day Aichi prefecture) in the lineage of the great 17th century artist Yamamoto Shunsho.

Following this process (called aratogi) comes the suri-urushi process, in which raw lacquer is applied with cotton and wiped with crumpled rice paper; a finishing burnish (shiage togi) is then done with charcoal. Next, granular charcoal is applied with water, using a soft cloth, and gently polished. Finally, suri-urushi and polishing is repeated three times.

A sheer cascade of silver mist drops into the darkness beyond a golden outcrop harboring an ancient pine laden with blossoming wisteria vines. Togidashi, taka-maki-e and kirigane, this is a breathtaking box dating from the 19th to opening of the 20th century. Inside is elegantly decorated with drifting clouds of golden mist. Overall in excellent condition, enclosed in a period wooden box. It is 23 x 21.5 x 4.3 cm (9 x 8-1/2 x 1-3/4 inches).

An Ancient wooden casket for Buddhist ritual implements lacquered black and decorated with lotus flowers in silver and gold on scrolling vines with an inscription beneath stating it was donated in the New Year of Kenmu 2 (1334). The lacquer, originally black, has oxidized to a mellow chocolate color. It is 33.5 x 18.5 x 13 cm (13 x 7-1/2 x 5 inches). As one may imagine there is a great deal of wrinkling of the lacquer from shrinkage, some losses and much wear to the edges. Nevertheless, the box is stable and shows no damage from breaks, cracks or poor handling.

Gold willows drape over the highly unusual silver-tinged blue lacquer surface of this water container by Tonami Sosai II enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Uwajima Nuri Seigin Yanagi Te-oke Mizusashi (Silver Blue Uwajima Lacquer, Willow, Bucket Shaped Mizusashi). The outside is a shimmering blue tinged with silver, while inside is black covered in powdered silver flake. A striking combination. The willow is delicately depicted in tendrils of gold about the circumference, on the lid and on the handle with highlights on the trunk of kirigane applied gold. It is 22.5 cm (8-3/4 inches) diameter and in excellent condition.
Tonami Sosai II (1918-2004) was born in Kanazawa city, , although raised in the world of lacquer ware, began his artistic career studying Nihonga (Japanese style painting) under Hatakeyama Kinsei. In 1950 he returned to the family business, studying under his father the first generation Sosai as well as his cousin Oba Shogyo who would later be named a living National Treasure for Maki-e. Tonami Sosai II (1918-2004) was born in Kanazawa city, , although raised in the world of lacquer ware, began his artistic career studying Nihonga (Japanese style painting) under Hatakeyama Kinsei. In 1950 he returned to the family business, studying under his father the first generation Sosai as well as his cousin Oba Shogyo who would later be named a living National Treasure for Maki-e. He exhibited with the National Traditional Crafts Exhibition among others, and received the Nihon Kogeikai Kaicho prize there in 1984.

Mother of pearl flowers rise among the large leaves of a paulownia tree on this small lacquer box and tray dating from the early 20th century enclosed in the original signed wooden box by Yoshida Rissai. The workmanship is flawless, with a fine sense of depth brought on by the mother of pearl lined with gold powder and set against a ground of golden mist on black. Inside is a rich, red tinged nashiji ground. The box is 14 x 11 x 5.5 cm (5-1/2 x 4-1/4 x 2-1/4 inches) and both box and tray are in excellent condition.

The gist of the script is Taoist, something to the effect of: This is my life, I am neither overtly talented nor gifted with genius, like a sail boat alone tossed among the waves I drink freely of sake untouched (unfettered) by others seen only from a distance. Ink on paper in a the rough silk border preferred by Literati artists with exquisite turned ivory rollers enclosed in a period wooden box (the rollers will be changed for something suitable if exporting). The scroll is 17-1/2 x 75-1/2 inches (44 x 192 cm) and is in overall very good condition, with minor wrinkles and handling marks typical of age.

The largest vase I have ever seen for sale by Miyagawa (Makuzu) Kozan enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Seika Sansui taki-ho-ga Kabin (Blue and White Vase decorated with waterfall Mountain Scene). It is 54 cm (21 inches) tall 36 cm (14 inches9 diameter and in excellent condition, signed on the base.

A large basin in striking cobalt designs by Miyagawa (Makuzu) Kozan enclosed in an unsigned wooden box. The central figure is a soaring phoenix spiral n elaborate plumage surrounded by clam shaped scallops in which leaping carp vie for the prize. About the rim 3 dragons battle for the flaming pearl. Outside serpentine vines intertwine about voluptuous flowers over phoenix. All together a sumptuous and royal aura. It is roughly 32 cm (12-1/2 inches) diameter and in excellent condition. A raw-clay-bodied globular vase decorated with comic deer in overglaze enamels by Miyagawa (Makuzu) Kozan enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Akebononoiro-do Shika no zu Kabin (Vase of Sunrise-colored Clay decorated with Deer). The farcical creatures are punctuated by the fellow caught in the act of chewing his hoof (or was he having a scratch?) He looks back at the viewer with wide eyed and sheepish. The vase is 24 cm (9-1/2 inches) diameter and in excellent condition.

The Shishimai dance tradition is common throughout east Asia. A single, or sometimes a pair of dancers, don the costume and parade through the street biting people, especially children, on the head. This is believed to ward off misfortune and evil spirits, and make a child overcome fear. An incense burner by Miyagawa (Makuzu) Kozan in the shape of a shrouded Lion Dancer in vibrant colors enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Ninsei-I Shishimai Gata Koro. The koro is 14 cm (roughly 5-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.

This Toba-e E-maki appears to be a 19th century Gi-ga follower of the later 18th to early 19th century Osaka "Manga-ka" Nichosai (Matsudaira Heisaburo). His humorous images of Hell were quite popular, known as Kakuyu painting. Overall the genre has many names, Gi-ga being all encompassing, Toba-e being descriptive of this particular style, and Kakuyu-fu being the style of Nichosai. It ends with a simple stamp which reads Fish (Gyo/Sakana). It is 11 by 174 inches (28 x 442 cm). Very interesting look into the early world of Manga

A comic scene in ink on paper of boys herding oxen by Nagasawa Rosetsu spreads across these two low screens. The central characters, one in the lead the second astride one of the behemoths crossing a bridge is distracted by a butterfly floating by above while the beast in front steps on its own rope, pulling his head back to the viewer with a quizzical expression. Other oxen and boys populate the background. All is performed in very soft gray tones with abbreviated detail as if viewed through summer haze, with the leads in dark, quick strokes, creating a dynamic juxtaposition and sense of immediacy. Originally either part of a larger scene, or, more likely, taken from Fusuma doors. They bear the artists seal on one edge. The screens are 188 x 97 cm (74 x 38 inches) and are in fine condition considering their age. A lay Zen practitioner, the motif of ox herding was likely very close to the artists heart, for it is often used metaphorically to describe the stages of a practitioner's progress toward enlightenment (reference the 10 ox herding pictures).
There are many unconfirmed stories of the origins of this artist, what we know is Nagasawa Rosetsu (1754-1799) was born somewhere in the Kansai region near the capitol and moved to Kyoto in 1781, where he became a student of Maruyama Ōkyo. A small round heavily lacquered box made to contain incense carved with Peonies by Imperial Artist Suwa Sozan I enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Layer upon layer of lacquer has been applied over time, each subsequent layer allowing for drying, then the entire is carved through with the floral motif. This would likely have been years in the making. This kogo is 3 inches (7.5 cm) diameter and in perfect condition signed underneath Sozan. Sozan was known best for his impeccable celadons, and was one of only five potters ever recognized with the status of Teishitsu Gigei-In (Member of the Imperial Art Academy). Lesser known is his predilection for lacquerware. An ardent Literatus and Sinophile, Sozan would try his hand at various art forms, including painting, calligraphy, carved lacquer, inlayed lacquer, porcelain and pottery.

The Heron Maiden coquettishly covers her face, the intimation of snow in the vacant background with large occasional flakes falling in the fore on this large work by important 20th century artist Kitano Tsunetomi. Pigment on silk in the original silk border with solid ivory rollers (these will be changed if exporting). It comes in a later collector’s double wood box. The scroll is 46 x 206 cm (18 x 81 inches) and in overall fine, original condition. There are faint scattered foxing marks typical of the era.
In the Japanese folk- tale of The Heron Maiden (Sagi Musume), a young man comes across a wounded heron, and he takes it in and nurses it back to health. When the heron has regained the use of its wings, he releases it, and the heron flies away. Time passes and the young man meets a beautiful young woman with whom he falls in love. They get married and begin living happily together. The young wife weaves a particular kind of silk brocade in which the designs appear in relief. The young man sells the fabric, and the two are able to support themselves in this way. But the young woman places a constraint upon the man: He must never observe her while she is weaving her fabric. Of course the young man cannot resist the temptation to look, and when he does he sees a heron at the loom. Before his eyes the heron is transformed into a beautiful woman. Now that the secret has been exposed, the heron Maiden’s happy life with the young man must come to an end. She bids her husband a sad goodbye, and flies off to her heron companions.

After the 9th Bunten he became active in the Nihon Bijutsuin, an artistic association dedicated to promoting painting and sculpture in Japan, particularly nihonga, and became a judge of the Inten Exhibition. He played a key role in the Osaka art world, participating in the creation of the Osaka Art Exhibition in 1915 and the formation of the Osaka Sawakai in 1918. … He passed away in 1947 at the age of 67..

Kannon (Guanyin) the bodhisattva of compassion, is depicted by two of the most famous painters of the early Showa period on this pair of presentation cloths by Hashimoto Kansetsu and Tomita Keisen. Keisen’s loosely brushed image of a cherubic Kannon sits in the center of an Enso Zen circle. The calligraphy on the left reads "Entsu", a Buddhist term combining the kanji for circle and authority, loosely meaning knowledge of the circle of Buddhist Doctrine, the cycle of life and of all things eternal. Kansetsu, on the other hand, creates a more severe image of Kannon seated in a lotus petal floating in tumultuous seas. The back of this features a long inscription and is dated Showa 7 (1932). The date coincides with the peak of Tomita Keisens popularity, shortly before his untimely death. It is also the year Kansetsu lost his wife, and this may explain the difference in perception of the Compassionate figure. He subsequently created a temple (Gesshinji) in her honor. Both come wrapped around pillows in a red lacquered wooden box signed by Keisen. Each is 34.5 x 36.5 cm (13-1/2 x 14-1/2 inches) and both are in fine condition.

He studied at Chikujokai under Takeuchi Seiho (1864-1942), but eventually withdrew due to differences of opinion. He visited Europe in 1921 and after that spent part of almost every year in China. His early years were heavily influenced by ancient Chinese painting, a passion for which he made frequent trips to the continent. Many of his paintings were inspired by Chinese scenery or Chinese classical literature. His former residence in Kyoto is now a museum of his work called the Hakusasonso. He exhibited consistently at the Bunten, and was a member of the Imperial Art Academy. Works by him are held in the Kyoto National Museum, Tokyo National Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, and the Boston Museum of Fine Art, as well as almost every major collection.
Tomita Keisen (1879-1936) was born in Fukuoka on the southern Island of Kyushu into a family of restaurateurs, however fascinated with the arts, he began studying painting at the age of 12 in the Kano school tradition with Kinugasa Morimasa (1852-1912), the official painter for the Kuroda clan. In 1896, he went to Kyōto to continue his education in the Shijo manner with Tsuji Kako, and exhibited with the Japan Painting Association as well as with the Bunten/Teiten National Exhibitions among many others. Keisen also sought inspiration in Buddhist paintings from the Nara and Heian periods which he studied on frequent trips to Nara, the ancient capital. In the 1920s, he would delve into the concepts of the Nanga tradition of literati painting, and his unorthodox use of color and dramatic sense of proportion would propel him to great fame. Religion fascinated Keisen, and much of his work centers around these ideals. His works also show the influence of literati artists Tomioka Tessai and eccentric Buddhist Sengai Gibon. He developed a hybrid of these which has proven extremely popular, even with contemporary audiences and his work is still highly prized. In 1935 he was made a member of the Japan Art Academy. He died the following year at the age of 58. Works by him are held in Tokyo National Museum of Modern art and Kyoto Natioanl Museum of Modern Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, The Kyoto City (Kyocera) Museum, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Rijksmuseum, Fukuoka Art Museum, Tokyo Fuji Art Museum and many others. A brush, ink stick letter knife and ink stone are set into a compartment inside this flattened bamboo shape carved from Zitan wood with a poem engraved into the lid signed on the back side Hokkyo Sessai and enclosed in a wooden box. Lifting out the lid by means of the strap, one finds the knife tucked into the handle, the brush, stone, and ink laid out and ready to use. It is 34 cm (13-1/2 inches) long. The ink stone, firmly embedded in the wood, has cracked, otherwise all is in excellent condition but for a slight nick in the edge just above the himotoshi chord loop. According to the International Netsuke Society Journal Volume 36, Number 1: Shima Sessai (1820-1879), was given title Hokkyo… Any carvings signed Hokkyo Sessai date between 1866 and 1879, Sessais last 13 years. A Netsuke by the artist is held in the collection of LACMA and a carving of two wrestlers by this artist sold at Christies London for 117,000 GBP in 2004.

A set of sake decanters in the shape of Split Bamboo Tea Whisks by the third generation Kiyomizu Rokubei enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The artists stamp is clearly impressed into the nunome cloth-textured base. They are 14 cm (5-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition dating from the mid 19th century.
Kiyomizu Rokubei III (1820-1883) was the second son of Rokubei II (1790-1860) and took over the family kiln at the age of 18 after his father retired in 1838. (His father subsequently went to Echigo to open the Oyama-yaki kiln at the bequest of the local Daimyo). Being at the head of the family business in the tumultuous era at the end of the Edo and beginning of the Meiji, he was a driving force behind the revival of the Kyoto industry after the transfer of the capitol to Tokyo in 1868. He produced a great deal of work in various styles, and was known for his painting skills, having studied under the great 19th century Literati Oda Kaisen. While preserving the techniques of his forebears, Rokubei III was also open to new, foreign influences. He accompanied Miyagwa Kozan to Yokohama to investigate newly imported western advancements in pottery and production (Kozan would subsequently move to Yokohama). He was greatly affected by Modernism, and produced western influenced dishes in addition to the staple Japanese fair. In 1879, he was one of the artists commissioned to make a tea service for use during the visit of former US president Ulysses S. Grant. He frequently served on juries and won medals at domestic exhibitions, including the Kyoto Exhibition (1875), the Domestic Industrial Exhibition (1877), and the Nagoya Exhibition (1878). His works also featured in exhibitions in Paris, Sydney and Amsterdam

Bonji Buddhist characters in five rings of silver, gold and brass damascene decorate this Incense burner by Izumi Ryoichi enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kin-do Gorin-mon Koro. We see the number five in Buddhism and Bushido, With the elements Earth, Water, Fire, Wind and Air, as well the famous treatise on fighting by Miyamoto Musashi is called the Book of Five Rings, and the stone stupa seen all over Japan called the Gorinto (Five part tower). This is 3-1/2 inches (9 cm) diameter, roughly the same height and in excellent condition, signed Ryuichi on the base.
Just to make everything really confusing, the metal artist Izumi Ryuichi goes by a plethora of names, depending upon the genre he is creating for, Izumi Ryoichi, Ryusen, Koshiro. He was born in Iwate in 1946, apprenticing under metal craftsman Fujiwara Tomohiko at the age of 20. 10 years later he would study metal carving techniques under Katsura Moriyuki, and then under Living National Treasures Sekiya Shiro and Kashima Ikkoku at the age of 36, absorbing techniques and styles all along the way. A gorgeous Jubako stacking box of lacquered wood decorated with burgeoning grape vines in powdered gold maki-e dating from the 19th century enclosed in the original wooden storage box. Inside oxidized vermilion grants a sense of celebration, while the outside covered in polished black is the perfect back drop to the shimmering gold decoration. Assembled it is 24 x 26 x 31 cm (9-1/2 x 10-1/4 x 12 inches). Overall it is in very good condition, with some minor dings in the edges typical of use. Jubako were used to contain various types of foods during festive occasions, and can still be seen in use at New Years for O-sechi in modern Japan.

A large and important work by Miyanaga Kozan of overall raw clay in a Nanban style with drips of color featuring a tiny colorful crab crawling out of a hollow in the base. It is 30.5 cm (12 inches) tall and in excellent condition, in an age darkened wooden collectors box titled Makuzu Yaki Kabin, Miyagwa Kozan Sei followed by a very large stamp. This is a rarity!
The name Kozan was granted by Prince Yasui-no-Miya in 1851 in honor of the tea ware produced during the later Edo for the imperial Court by the tenth-generation head of the Kyoto pottery family Miyagawa Chozo. The Kozan (Makuzu) kiln as we know it today was established in Yokohama in 1871 by the 11th generation head of the family where he reinvented the family business. A tripod koro with custom silver lid and rosewood stand by Miura Chikusen II enclosed in a wooden box dated early Autumn 1920 signed by Ume, the mother of the second generation head of the family who died young that year. The white porcelain is roughly 15 cm (6 inches) tall on the stand, 10 cm (4 inches) diameter. This type of Sinophile work was very popular throughout the Meiji and Taisho periods, and Sencha steeped tea had a profound impact on Japanese culture at the time. For more on that see the book ‘Tea of the Sages: The Art of Sencha’ by Patricia Graham (1998).

A pair of red and silver iron lotus flowers with long handles serving as Buddhist candle-stands, the light rising from within the sacred flower. Overall raw iron, the coloration of the flower petals is from silver and red lacquer. Each is 26.5 cm (10-1/2 inches) long and in excellent condition.

A superb Landscape by Yano Tetsuzan dated the second month of 1924 enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The arched rooves of Chinese style pavilions rise in the placed waters under th shelter of precipitous verdant cliffs, trees in fall colors in the foreground setting the stage. Above a long verse in Kanshi signed Tetsuzan. Ink and pigment on silk in a dark blue-green satin border with ivory rollers (the rollers will be changed for export). The scroll is 54 x 193 cm (21-1/2 76 inches) and in overall excellent condition.

In his final years he helped to establish the Nihon Suiboku-ga Kyokai (Japanese Ink Painters Society). His 1942 work “Waves” is held in the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo.

Birds take shelter for the coming of night as the mist rolls in on the bare branches of a stand of trees huddled along a stream, all dyed with the colors of late autumn in this exceptional work by Hashimoto Kansetsu enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Seen in silhouette against the moon, are these crows, the stalwart creatures which hunker down through winter, or are they Sagi (herons) harbingers of the cold to come? This painting is a superb example of his mature style. It is mounted in the finest brocades of the time, and features large ivory rollers (which would need to be changed if exporting). It comes enclosed in a double wood box, the inner Kiri, complete with a special silk and paper cover to protect the top, the outer covered in red lacquer. The scroll is 73 .5 x 163 cm (29 x 64 inches) and is in fine condition.
Hashimoto Kansetsu (1883–1945) was born in Kobe, son of painter Hashimoto Kaikan from whom he gained a love of Chinese culture. He studied at Chikujokai under Takeuchi Seiho (1864-1942), but eventually withdrew due to differences of opinion. He visited Europe in 1921 and after that spent part of almost every year in China. Many of his paintings were inspired by Chinese scenery or Chinese classical literature. His former residence in Kyoto is now a museum of his work called the Hakusasonso

Tempestuous waves in fine gold lines splash between lightning shapes decorated with reed curtains on the sides of this singular lacquered wooden koro with woven silver lid dating from the Momoyama to opening of the Edo period, Later 16th to early 17th century. It is 8.5 cm (3-1/4 inches) high, 7.5 cm (3 inches) diameter. The worn base has been re-lacquered to protect the wood core from splitting or cracking otherwise is entirely original to the period.

A set of five exquisite Sencha Tea Cups of crackle-glazed pottery covered outside with black lacquer decorated with golden plum blossoms. Each bears an impressed seal in the base reading Toyosuke from the Nagoya studio of Toyoraku (also read Horaku) dating from the later 19th century. Inside each cup is a stylized single plum blossom. This set is exceptional! It is enclosed in a custom made wooden box. Each is 6.2 cm (2-1/2 inches) diameter, 4.8 cm (2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
The Toyoraku tradition began in the mid 1700s, however it was the fourth generation head of the household (Toyosuke IV 1813~1858) who moved the kiln to Kamimaezu in Nagoya and began applying lacquer and Maki-e to the works. Intricate, subtle, delicate, elegant; all words which could be applied to this set of ten dishes decorated with flowers in raised reliefby Takahashi Seizan enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Gyokude Kusabana Kameko-gata Sara (Tortoise Shell Shaped Dishes decorated with Flowers and Grass in Pearl-slip) Pale white slip has been applied in thick, sculpted patterns to a cream surface, sweeping sides peaked with gold rims. Each plate is 22 cm (9 inches) wide, 5 cm (2 inches) tall. There are a few color infusions into the glaze, but no chips cracks or repairs. These date to the Taisho period, a time of great innovation. They are reminiscent of the works of other Kyoto artists at the time, in particular Seifu Yohei and his Taihakuji, and Kiyomizu Rokube and his Taireiji.

A pair of unorthodox Edo period guardian corbels in the shape of mythical lion-like creatures (Shishi) made to be notched into a corner under the eaves of Shinto and Buddhist temples to ward off evil spirits. Ordinarily just the heads are carved, these are unusual in that their fore-paws have also been depicted, granting a greater sense of movement than most. Carved Hinoki (cypress), they are 30 x 18 x 20 cm (12 x 7 x 8 inches) each and in overall fine condition.

A shu-iro red lacquered sign in the shape of a tea jar dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. A long verse has been carved into the surface before lacquering. The back is bound with cloth and lacquered black. The sign is 16 x 20 inches (41 x 50 cm). There are minor chips typical of age, but is in overall very good condition. You will find in there a black lacquered Kanban of similar shape and style.

Pure elegance and simplicity of form by Komazawa Risai enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Mage-Kensui (Round Spent Water Container). It is lacquered outside is tame-nuri opaque wine-red, inside is polished ro-iro black decorated with gold reeds overlapping from all directions. It is 16 cm (6-1/2 inches) diameter, 7 cm (2-3/4 inches) tall and in excellent condition. It is made by Komazawa Risai; head of one of the ten crafts families of the three Senke tea schools adhering to the way of tea as taught by Sen No Rikkyu in the 16th century. The bowl is made of two pieces, the base a thin flat plank cut round, then the vertical is bent around and secured together with binding, the whole then covered in lacquer. The shape is that of a simple Oke or shallow bucket, however the artist has made it so much more than that. This is the epitome of the Japanese Tea Aesthetic.

Japan's history of tea drinking is no different, becoming a focal point for the arts and enlightenment to the point where it became the unique ceremony we now know as chanoyu or the Way of Tea. The name can actually be something of a misnomer to the uninitiated, as although there are similarities in form and structure, there is no singular tea ceremony, and ceremonies can be very varied dependent on season, setting and school, yielding in the process a vast culture that can take a lifetime to become truly aquatinted with. Sen no Rikyu, born in 1522 is largely credited with instilling the quintessentially Japanese values into the custom and codifying the practice into a “Way”. To this very day the three houses of Omotesenke, Urasenke, and Mushakojisenke continue his tradition and teachings every time they perform the tea ceremony, and yet this is no fixed form, but an enduring process of gradual evolution and innovation that continues to reflect Japan beyond the walls of the chashitsu, tea room. In the case of the three Senke houses under Sen no Rikyu's teachings, in their centuries of history we find that their ceremonial tools are all produced by the same ten families, and ever since Mitsukoshi held an exhibition of their works in 1915 the name "Senke Jushoku", or the "Ten Designated Craftsmen of Senke", has entered common usage to describe this small collection of artisans who hold within their lineage the very DNA of the aesthetics of the tea ceremony.

After the death of the thirteenth generation, his wife Namie deicided to become the fourteenth Risai and have her daughter Chiyoko succeed her in the future, but the daughter died young in 1961, and she also died in 1977, leaving the position vacant to this day.

An incredible carved bamboo vase of warriors making their way through forested crags whipped by roiling mist cut from a single piece of bamboo and signed on the base Omikuni Sakata Shiori Yamaguchi Moritsugu Saku :Made by Yamaguchi Moritsugu of Shiori, Sakata, Omi Province (Modern day Maibara Shiga Prefecture on the North-Eastern shore of Lake Biwa). It is 35.5 cm (14 inches) tall and in overall excellent condition, enclosed in an old wooden box.
Possibly the image of Okuninushi and his five warrior kami (deities) created in a contest with his sister. They were present when he was forced to give up his lordship of the great reed plain, and sequester himself to the world of the unseen.

An evocative image of a bear hunkered down and looking a bit befuddled, perhaps awaking from winter slumber, in un-glazed white porcelain from the Tatsuno kilns of Banko in Mie Prefecture. It is sealed on the base with two stamps, one reading Banko, the other Tatsuno. The image is 23 x 20 x 16.5 cm (9 x 8 x 6-1/2 inches) and in excellent condition, enclosed in a period collectors kiri-wood box. Imagery of animals such as this were very popular in the Taisho (1911-1925) to early Showa era. The expression of this creature is masterful, the execution superlative, and the texture happily left matte; a far cut above the ordinary.

A Tamasudare-ami Hanakago Basket by Yamamoto Chikuryusai I of round bamboo strands enclosed in the original signed wooden box lacquered in translucent red. The basket exudes a deep respect for the tradition, every knot perfect, the proportions exquisite. It is 19 cm (7-1/2 inches) diameter, 37 cm (14-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.

He was renowned for his calligraphy, sencha aesthetic, and his elegant and reserved artistic vision. His baskets received awards at several important international expositions, and, with his two sons, Chikuryusai II and Chikken, participated in the annual Teiten/Bunten National Art Exhibitions. He served as mentor to not only his two sons but also Hamano Chikkosai, Ikeda Seiryusai, and Suemura Shobun. In 1929, he gave the artist “Go” (name) to his son but continued working under the name Shoen until his death in 1945. Work by him is held in the Asian Art Museum San Francisco, The Minneapolis Institute of Art and The Met New York among many other public and private collections.
